Investigation into research literature was conducted in order to understand the impacts of traditional concrete construction and explore recent advancements in 3D printing technologies and methodologies. The research project focuses on the relationship between computer modeling, testing, and verification to reduce concrete usage in flexural elements. The project features small-scale and large-scale printing applications modelled by finite element analysis software and printed for laboratory testing. The laboratory testing included mortar cylinder testing, digital image correlation (DIC), and four pointbending tests. Results demonstrated comparable performance between casted, printed solid, and printed optimized flexural elements. Results additionally mimicked finite element models regarding failure regions.

Ultra High Performance (UHP) cementitious binders are a class of cement-based materials with high strength and ductility, designed for use in precast bridge connections, bridge superstructures, high load-bearing structural members like columns, and in structural repair and strengthening. This dissertation aims to elucidate the chemo-mechanical relationships in complex UHP binders to facilitate better microstructure-based design of these materials and develop machine learning (ML) models to predict their scale-relevant properties from microstructural information.To establish the connection between micromechanical properties and constitutive materials, nanoindentation and scanning electron microscopy experiments are performed on several cementitious pastes. Following Bayesian statistical clustering, mixed reaction products with scattered nanomechanical properties are observed, attributable to the low degree of reaction of the constituent particles, enhanced particle packing, and very low water-to-binder ratio of UHP binders. Relating the phase chemistry to the micromechanical properties, the chemical intensity ratios of Ca/Si and Al/Si are found to be important parameters influencing the incorporation of Al into the C-S-H gel.
ML algorithms for classification of cementitious phases are found to require only the intensities of Ca, Si, and Al as inputs to generate accurate predictions for more homogeneous cement pastes. When applied to more complex UHP systems, the overlapping chemical intensities in the three dominant phases – Ultra High Stiffness (UHS), unreacted cementitious replacements, and clinker – led to ML models misidentifying these three phases. Similarly, a reduced amount of data available on the hard and stiff UHS phases prevents accurate ML regression predictions of the microstructural phase stiffness using only chemical information. The use of generic virtual two-phase microstructures coupled with finite element analysis is also adopted to train MLs to predict composite mechanical properties. This approach applied to three different representations of composite materials produces accurate predictions, thus providing an avenue for image-based microstructural characterization of multi-phase composites such UHP binders. This thesis provides insights into the microstructure of the complex, heterogeneous UHP binders and the utilization of big-data methods such as ML to predict their properties. These results are expected to provide means for rational, first-principles design of UHP mixtures.

There has been a renewed interest to understand the degradation mechanism of concrete under radiation as many nuclear reactors are reaching their expiration date. Much of the information on the degradation mechanism of concrete under radiation comes from the experiments, which are carried out on very small specimens. With the advent of finite element analysis, a numerical predictive tool is desired that can predict the extent of damage in the nuclear concrete structure.

A mesoscale micro-structural framework is proposed in Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) finite element framework which represents the first step in this direction. As part of the framework, a coupled creep damage algorithm was developed and implemented in MOOSE. The algorithm considers creep through rheological models, while damage evolves exponentially as a function of elastic strain and creep strain. A characteristic length is introduced in the formulation such that the energy release rate associated with each element remains the same to avoid vanishing energy dissipation with mesh refinement. A creep damage parameter quantifies the effect of creep strain on the damage that was calibrated using three-point bending experiments with varying rates of loading.

The creep damage model was also validated with restrained ring shrinkage tests on cementitious materials containing compliant/stiff inclusions subjected to variable drying conditions. The simulation approach explicitly considers: (i) moisture diffusion driven differential shrinkage along the depth of the specimen (ii) viscoelastic response of aging cementitious materials (iii) isotropic damage model with Rankine′s failure initiation criterion, and (iv) random distribution of tensile strengths of individual finite elements.

The model was finally validated with experimental results on neutron-irradiated concrete. The simulation approach considers: (i) coupled hygro-thermal model to predict the temperature and humidity profile inside the specimen (ii) radiation-induced volumetric expansion of aggregates (RIVE) (iii) thermal, shrinkage and creep effects based on the temperature and humidity profile and (iv) isotropic damage model with Rankine’s criterion to determine failure initiation.

with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination (NPDES) permit, which includes the infiltration of stormwater runoff from highways and implementing soil based best managements practices (BMPs). Stormwater BMPs are in place to prevent pollution in stormwater runoff as well as to facilitate the stormwater discharge from the road. Per this new permit, Caltrans is to install soil based BMPs that can absorb the 85th percentile of a 24-hour stormwater event. In order to absorb the stormwater runoff, the area used is the Clear Recovery Zone (CRZ), which are the road embankments/slopes located adjacent to the roadside. The CRZ must be traversable and recoverable in order to meet roadside traffic safety standards. A major concern for Caltrans is the uncertainty on how these BMPs will affect the safety of a vehicle, if a vehicle were to interact with the soft soils.

In order to provide an insight on the effects of the BMPs, the modeling and simulation of vehicle dynamics under certain interactions between the roadside, soil, and vehicle was completed. The research used computer simulations to quantify the probability of rollover accidents under several different vehicle, driving and ground conditions. The vehicles traversing typical archetype roadsides on soft soil are simulated using MsMac3D software. It was important to model the properties of the vehicle, roadside, mechanical and hydraulic properties of soils realistically in order to obtain an accurate representation of a real-world vehicle and soil interaction.

The outcome was a library of simulations that provided quantifiable data on the effect that soft soils have on the safety and rollover potential of a vehicle traversing the CRZ.

This dissertation aims at developing novel materials and processing routes using alkali activated aluminosilicate binders for porous (lightweight) geopolymer matrices and 3D-printing concrete applications. The major research objectives are executed in different stages. Stage 1 includes developing synthesis routes, microstructural characterization, and performance characterization of a family of economical, multifunctional porous ceramics developed through geopolymerization of an abundant volcanic tuff (aluminosilicate mineral) as the primary source material. Metakaolin, silica fume, alumina powder, and pure silicon powder are also used as additional ingredients when necessary and activated by potassium-based alkaline agents. In Stage 2, a processing route was developed to synthesize lightweight geopolymer matrices from fly ash through carbonate-based activation. Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) was used in this study to produce controlled pores through the release of CO2 during the low-temperature decomposition of Na2CO3. Stage 3 focuses on 3D printing of binders using geopolymeric binders along with several OPC-based 3D printable binders. In Stage 4, synthesis and characterization of 3D-printable foamed fly ash-based geopolymer matrices for thermal insulation is the focus. A surfactant-based foaming process, multi-step mixing that ensures foam jamming transition and thus a dry foam, and microstructural packing to ensure adequate skeletal density are implemented to develop foamed suspensions amenable to 3D-printing. The last stage of this research develops 3D-printable alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag mixture. Slag is used as the source of aluminosilicate and shows excellent mechanical properties when activated by highly alkaline activator (NaOH + sodium silicate solution). However, alkali activated slag sets and hardens rapidly which is undesirable for 3D printing. Thus, a novel mixing procedure is developed to significantly extend the setting time of slag activated with an alkaline activator to suit 3D printing applications without the use of any retarding admixtures. This dissertation, thus advances the field of sustainable and 3D-printable matrices and opens up a new avenue for faster and economical construction using specialized materials.

An orthotropic elasto-plastic damage material model (OEPDMM) suitable for impact simulations has been developed through a joint research project funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Development of the model includes derivation of the theoretical details, implementation of the theory into LS-DYNA®, a commercially available nonlinear transient dynamic finite element code, as material model MAT 213, and verification and validation of the model. The material model is comprised of three major components: deformation, damage, and failure. The deformation sub-model is used to capture both linear and nonlinear deformations through a classical plasticity formulation. The damage sub-model is used to account for the reduction of elastic stiffness of the material as the degree of plastic strain is increased. Finally, the failure sub-model is used to predict the onset of loss of load carrying capacity in the material. OEPDMM is driven completely by tabulated experimental data obtained through physically meaningful material characterization tests, through high fidelity virtual tests, or both. The tabulated data includes stress-strain curves at different temperatures and strain rates to drive the deformation sub-model, damage parameter-total strain curves to drive the damage sub-model, and the failure sub-model can be driven by the data required for different failure theories implemented in the computer code. The work presented herein focuses on the experiments used to obtain the data necessary to drive as well as validate the material model, development and implementation of the damage model, verification of the deformation and damage models through single element (SE) and multi-element (ME) finite element simulations, development and implementation of experimental procedure for modeling delamination, and finally validation of the material model through low speed impact simulations and high speed impact simulations.

Cement is a remarkable construction material that allows for the formation of complex geometric forms while still providing adequate strength properties to be used as a structural material. This research focuses on Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) which is a specialized class of cementitious material that exhibits exceptional strength and durability properties when compared to standard concrete. UHPC achieves these properties through a combination of high cement content, high particle packing density, low water-to-cement ratio, and the additional of special admixtures such as superplasticizer. These components all serve the purpose of increasing UHPC strength and mechanical properties by helping achieve much high material densities than other forms of concrete.
In this study, aggregate material evaluation and testing was conducted for use in the mix design of the UHPC mixes that were carried out and tested. Each mix employed the same general UHPC mixture design with the only difference being the aggregate proportions of #4, #8, and #10 nominal size aggregates. The purpose of using a UHPC mix design that was independent of aggregate proportioning was to evaluate the effects of varying aggregate particle packing densities. Increased particle packing density of UHPC provide improved mechanical performance by decreasing the distance between particle within cured UHPC, thereby producing significant increases in compressive strength, tensile strength, durability, and service life of UHPC when compared to standard concrete. For this study, particle packing densities of 0.509, 0.521, 0.540, and 0.552 were employed and evaluated on the basis of compressive strength and tensile strength to determine the optimum UHPC mix design.

With the growth of global population, the demand for sustainable infrastructure is significantly increasing. Substructures with appropriate materials are required to be built in or above soil that can support the massive volume of construction demand. However, increased structural requirements often require ground improvement to increase the soil capacity. Moreover, certain soils are prone to liquefaction during an earthquake, which results in significant structural damage and loss of lives. While various soil treatment methods have been developed in the past to improve the soil’s load carrying ability, most of these traditional treatment methods have been found either hazardous and may cause irreversible damage to natural environment, or too disruptive to use beneath or adjacent to existing structures. Thus, alternative techniques are required to provide a more natural and sustainable solution. Biomediated methods of strengthening soil through mineral precipitation, in particular through microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), have recently emerged as a promising means of soil improvement. In MICP, the precipitation of carbonate (usually in the form of calcium carbonate) is mediated by microorganisms and the process is referred to as biomineralization. The precipitated carbonate coats soil particles, precipitates in the voids, and bridges between soil particles, thereby improving the mechanical properties (e.g., strength, stiffness, and dilatancy). Although it has been reported that the soil’s mechanical properties can be extensively enhanced through MICP, the micro-scale mechanisms that influence the macro-scale constitutive response remain to be clearly explained.

The utilization of alternative techniques such as MICP requires an in-depth understanding of the particle-scale contact mechanisms and the ability to predict the improvement in soil properties resulting from calcite precipitation. For this purpose, the discrete element method (DEM), which is extensively used to investigate granular materials, is adopted in this dissertation. Three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) based numerical models are developed to simulate the response of bio-cemented sand under static and dynamic loading conditions and the micro-scale mechanisms of MICP are numerically investigated. Special focus is paid to the understanding of the particle scale mechanisms that are dominant in the common laboratory scale experiments including undrained and drained triaxial compression when calcite bridges are present in the soil, that enhances its load capacity. The mechanisms behind improvement of liquefaction resistance in cemented sands are also elucidated through the use of DEM. The thesis thus aims to provide the fundamental link that is important in ensuring proper material design for granular materials to enhance their mechanical performance.

Nanolaminate materials are layered composites with layer thickness ≤ 100 nm. They exhibit unique properties due to their small length scale, the presence of a high number of interfaces and the effect of imposed constraint. This thesis focuses on the mechanical behavior of Al/SiC nanolaminates. The high strength of ceramics combined with the ductility of Al makes this combination desirable. Al/SiC nanolaminates were synthesized through magnetron sputtering and have an overall thickness of ~ 20 μm which limits the characterization techniques to microscale testing methods. A large amount of work has already been done towards evaluating their mechanical properties under indentation loading and micropillar compression. The effects of temperature, orientation and layer thickness have been well established. Al/SiC nanolaminates exhibited a flaw dependent deformation, anisotropy with respect to loading direction and strengthening due to imposed constraint. However, the mechanical behavior of nanolaminates under tension and fatigue loading has not yet been studied which is critical for obtaining a complete understanding of their deformation behavior. This thesis fills this gap and presents experiments which were conducted to gain an insight into the behavior of nanolaminates under tensile and cyclic loading. The effect of layer thickness, tension-compression asymmetry and effect of a wavy microstructure on mechanical response have been presented. Further, results on in situ micropillar compression using lab-based X-ray microscope through novel experimental design are also presented. This was the first time when a resolution of 50 nms was achieved during in situ micropillar compression in a lab-based setup. Pores present in the microstructure were characterized in 3D and sites of damage initiation were correlated with the channel of pores present in the microstructure.

The understanding of these deformation mechanisms paved way for the development of co-sputtered Al/SiC composites. For these composites, Al and SiC were sputtered together in a layer. The effect of change in the atomic fraction of SiC on the microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. Extensive microstructural characterization was performed at the nanoscale level and Al nanocrystalline aggregates were observed dispersed in an amorphous matrix. The modulus and hardness of co- sputtered composites were much higher than their traditional counterparts owing to denser atomic packing and the absence of synthesis induced defects such as pores and columnar boundaries.

Being a remarkably versatile and inexpensive building material, concrete has found tremendous use in development of modern infrastructure and is the most widely used material in the world. Extensive research in the field of concrete has led to the development of a wide array of concretes with applications ranging from building of skyscrapers to paving of highways. These varied applications require special cementitious composites which can satisfy the demand for enhanced functionalities such as high strength, high durability and improved thermal characteristics among others.

The current study focuses on the fundamental understanding of such functional composites, from their microstructural design to macro-scale application. More specifically, this study investigates three different categories of functional cementitious composites. First, it discusses the differences between cementitious systems containing interground and blended limestone with and without alumina. The interground systems are found to outperform the blended systems due to differential grinding of limestone. A novel approach to deduce the particle size distribution of limestone and cement in the interground systems is proposed. Secondly, the study delves into the realm of ultra-high performance concrete, a novel material which possesses extremely high compressive-, tensile- and flexural-strength and service life as compared to regular concrete. The study presents a novel first principles-based paradigm to design economical ultra-high performance concretes using locally available materials. In the final part, the study addresses the thermal benefits of a novel type of concrete containing phase change materials. A software package was designed to perform numerical simulations to analyze temperature profiles and thermal stresses in concrete structures containing PCMs.

The design of these materials is accompanied by material characterization of cementitious binders. This has been accomplished using techniques that involve measurement of heat evolution (isothermal calorimetry), determination and quantification of reaction products (thermo-gravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, micro-indentation, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy) and evaluation of pore-size distribution (mercury intrusion porosimetry). In addition, macro-scale testing has been carried out to determine compression, flexure and durability response. Numerical simulations have been carried out to understand hydration of cementitious composites, determine optimum particle packing and determine the thermal performance of these composites.
