This thesis examines the three films of the most recent Star Wars trilogy (2015-2019) through a feminist lens, investigating the following question: is the trilogy’s leading woman, Rey, a feminist character throughout her arc? This thesis finds that while the telling of Rey’s story certainly has its feminist moments, it fails in several ways to truly abolish the patriarchal frame/attitude that was ingrained from the first two trilogies, leaving the character of Rey feeling incomplete. As the first female to be the primary protagonist in a Star Wars film, Rey’s strength and light certainly make her a positive female role model for young audiences. However, she is held back by the patriarchal society in which she exists and thus is ultimately reduced to being second-best in her own trilogy to the all-powerful older white men who came before her.

The sneaker world today is more popular than it has ever been before. The global sneaker market was valued at an estimated $79 billion in 2020 and is predicted to reach $120 billion by 2026. A big part of the reason why the sneaker market has taken off recently is because of sneaker collaborations. A sneaker collaboration is when an outside entity, like a sneaker store, athlete or celebrity, works with a footwear brand to create a new version of the shoe. But what makes a sneaker collaboration between a sneaker company and a celebrity successful? And do the things that industry insiders say make a successful collaboration correlate with young people's level of interest in buying the shoe. Do celebrity behaviors influence college-age students' perception of the sneaker. My Barrett Honor's Thesis examines sneaker collaborations between brands and celebrities and looks to find answers to these questions.

Influencer marketing continues to be a tool that companies utilize to add value to their brands. This thesis explores the impact that influencer marketing has within the alcohol industry. This was done by conducting secondary research that highlights the size of the alcohol industry, the rules and regulations that apply to alcohol marketing, the power of social media and consumer behavior, and the effectiveness of influencer marketing. From this research, I compile a set of industry best practices and offer a series of recommendations for smaller brands to take into consideration when using influencer marketing. I believe that my research-based recommendations of partnering with local influencers to create genuine connections with niche audiences, creating branded hashtags for marketing purposes, and capitalizing on current social media market trends allows for niche alcohol brands to implement influencer marketing in a way that best fits the brand and the people it serves.

Speech laws and protections are notably different in the U.S. and the UK, affecting how each country handles legal proceedings regarding libel and defamation suits. This report will explain these differences by looking at legal precedent and case examples in both countries. After comparing and contrasting legal doctrines in each country, I will analyze and apply the concepts to instances of political speech. Lastly, I will look at the intersection between libel laws and freedom of speech during elections and campaigns in both countries and review recent commentary regarding current libel laws in both countries.

This thesis will analyze the current position of the medical-grade skincare company Omni Bioceutical Innovations using the four frames discussed in Bolman and Deal’s Reframing Organizations. In reflecting upon the company through the structural, human resource, symbolic and political frame lens, a multi-frame marketing strategy is developed to address Omni’s current obstacles and future goals. The paper begins with a history of Omni Bioceutical Innovations and an analysis of the current marketing and skincare trends. Research on business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) strategies will also be shared to help provide context to Omni's obstacles when switching its marketing focus from B2B to B2C. The paper will then focus on Omni’s past digital strategy setbacks and present opportunities for how the company can move forward using Bolman and Deal’s frames and research on the skincare market and current digital marketing tactics. The resolutions presented will include insight into how to target the B2C market effectively through specific social platforms and offer suggestions of which elements should be incorporated into their new website. Through examining Omni’s past internal battles using the organizational frames, it helps clarify the needs of the company and reinforces the changes that must be made to help the company become even more successful.

Throughout the process of creating my thesis I was consistently intrigued by one constant phenomenon I’ve noticed throughout my time at Cronkite – that of competitive collaboration. I’d define that term as what happens when thousands of highly motivated individuals are thrown into a space where they are competing for a limited number of jobs in a high-pressure environment, while still needing to work with each other in order to succeed. Throw college social lives and general young adult anxieties on top of that, and you have the culture present within journalism school. For my project I wanted to contextualize and present a cohesive look at both the mentalities of students and the environment of the school. Dear Cronkite: A Love Letter is truly that. A labor of love and care for a place that has impacted me so deeply, I hope that this twenty-one-minute documentary opens a window into the world students deal with on a daily basis. Everyone interviewed expressed their deepest appreciation for the Cronkite School, while also making clear that they believe there are changes which could be made to better the educational environment. Every opinion and statement in this film comes from a place of compassion and respect.
