The development of modest residential properties in Phoenix, Arizona is a topic of great interest to architects and urban planners. Phoenix is a rapidly growing city, with a population that is projected to continue to increase in the coming years. As such, there is a great need for affordable and sustainable housing options that can accommodate this growing population. In this thesis prospectus, we will explore the architectural elements that make up a modern and modest residential design in Phoenix, Arizona by proposing a theoretical infill residential development located in Central Arizona. The design will be oriented to the biggest problem regarding residential development and design within Phoenix: lack of attainable housing and the impact of urbanization and urban sprawl. The thesis will focus on the key elements of affordability, residential variety, modern building techniques, and modular design.

Understanding perovskite degradation and stress responses under practical conditions is necessary to design efficient and stable photovoltaic devices. This experiment creates an in-situ stress testing system, in which the stress of a sample may be tested while it is subjected to conditions that it may experience in operation, such as cycles of sunlight. This immediate stress response is valuable in understanding what factors directly contribute to the stresses that degrade perovskite solar cells. Perovskite may be 2D or 3D and are composed of many different elements and additives. Each ink responds differently to sunlight exposure due to their different structures, which is important to characterize and comprehend. Preliminary testing and characterization for 2D, 3D and MAPI with gellan gum additive perovskite inks is conducted in this experiment. It is reported that the lattice expansion causing degradation-inducing stress is due to photon dosage rather than heat, and both 3D and 2D perovskites are sensitive to minute photon dosage.

An examination upon the historical evolution of the quarterback reveals that there were three foundational cycles leading up to 2007 which established the model for the mobile quarterback in the NFL. These were especially marked by exceptional quarterbacks breaking molds and pioneering African American quarterbacks overcoming racial stigma. Since 2007, there has been a steady trend of mobile quarterbacks replacing pocket passers, especially among playoff teams. Using k-means clustering, three different categories of quarterbacks were established: pocket passers, scramblers, and dual-threats. After evaluating various player metrics describing quarterback mobility, using yards per game, run-to-pass ratio, scramble rate, and designed run rate on third down produced the best model. This yielded an accurate prediction of covariance and a good overall fit. Teams with dual-threat quarterbacks had more success than other quarterback types on third-and-medium for dropbacks, third-and-long for designed runs, and explosive plays (plays which gain 20+ yards) on designed runs, passes, and quarterback scrambles. An examination into the schematic tendencies using film reveals that mobile quarterbacks allow the offense to have more freedom in its play calling and reduces the margin of error for defenses. Alongside the NFL’s increased focus on the concept of positionless football, this provides the framework for what this thesis calls the “Slashback Offense,” in which the offense utilizes a young, athletic quarterback in multiple positions in conjunction with a mobile starting quarterback. This can enhance option plays, establish the threat of another passer, and reduce the physical burden on the starting quarterback.

This review of research aimed to explore and understand the benefits of transferable life skills learned through playing sports. Life skills are internal assets, characteristics, and skills that are developed from certain experiences and are beneficial if not necessary to complete daily tasks. Life skills can further be broken down into emotional, cognitive, and social subcategories. During this review of research, it was found that participation in sports programs may enhance the acquisition or improvement of these personal assets due to the development of physical, emotional, psychological, and social aspects, which can be transferred to different areas of life, such as work, school, and family. This leads us to hypothesize that participation in sports can be beneficial when it comes to developing life skills that are used in all aspects of life. The current body of literature suggests that Youth sports should be encouraged from a young age for the obvious physical benefits and behind-the-scenes psychological benefits.

Microbial chain elongation (CE) has been shown at laboratory scale to drive reductive dehalogenation (RD) of chlorinated ethenes through both primary (oxidation of ethanol) and secondary (fermentation of medium chain carboxylates) hydrogen (H2) production. This process can offer engineers a sustainable in situ bioremediation alternative to address the challenges of conventional treatment technologies and processes. To aid in moving this process into field scale applications, a greater understanding of the specific microbiomes involved in both primary and secondary processes is needed. In this study, microbial community analysis was conducted on groundwater microcosms under various CE substrate combinations to quantify the extent of CE and the effect on RD of cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE). Taxonomic classification of amplicon sequence variants obtained from DNA extracted from groundwater microcosms were used to characterize microbiomes using QIIME 2. Pielou’s eveness and beta diversity (via unweighted UniFrac distances) analyses were performed to assess the diversity of microbiomes. Overall, low concentration microcosms (excluding L-7:1 EtOH:Butyrate and L-9:1 EtOH:Acetate + Soil) underwent complete RD, as evidenced by significant ethene production. Alpha and beta diversity analyses confirm the findings of chemical data that the overall substrate concentrations played a major role in determining the extent of CE and RD.

Intervention methods can be described as any approach that can be used to improve microbial water quality. In order to provide a foundation of background knowledge, a literature review was conducted to identify similar studies and collect relevant and timely research similar to the subject. The information gathered from the literature review was used to structure the sampling process and parameters. Using the research collected from the literature review, a review table was created to summarize the differences in the studies conducted and to determine research gaps. To categorize the studies, intervention methods, contaminants addressed, and water quality meta-data were differentiated for each of the articles. For the purpose of the sampling process, the three interventions analyzed consist of flushing, water heater set point change, and both flushing and water heater set point change. The locations of the sampling consisted of the city drinking water inlet, the basement janitor's closet, basement shower, 2nd floor, 3rd floor, and 7th floor break rooms and restrooms of the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV at ASU. For the flushing intervention, the sampling results demonstrated an increase in free and total chlorine concentration post flushing which aligns with the research found in the literature review. In addition, it was observed that iron concentrations drastically increased for both the cold and hot water by flushing. There was a significant decrease detected for ATP concentrations post flush in the hot line. However through the sampling session, the flushing intervention did not yield statistically significant results for Legionella concentrations.
