In the United States, two-thirds of adults are considered hypertensive orprehypertensive. In addition, chronic illness, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type II diabetes, results in $3.5 trillion in annual healthcare cost and is the primary cause of disability and death. As a result, many individuals seek cheaper and simpler alternatives to combat their conditions. In this exploratory analysis, a study assessing nitrate intake and its effects on vascular function in 39 young adult males was investigated for underlying metabolic variations through a liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry-based large-scale targeted metabolomics approach. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used, and 18 significant metabolites were discovered across the time, treatment, and time & treatment groups, including prostaglandin E2 (p<0.001), stearic acid (p=0.002), caprylic acid (p=0.016), pentadecanoic acid (p=0.027), and heptadecanoic acid (p=0.005). In addition, log-transformed principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares – discriminant analysis models demonstrated distinct separation among the treatment, control, and time variables. Moreover, pathway and enrichment analyses validated the effect of nitrate intake on the metabolite sets and its possible function in fatty acid oxidation. This better understanding of altered metabolic pathways may help explicate the benefits of nitrate on vascular function and reveal any unknown mechanisms of its supplementation.

Training the bench press exercise on a traditional flat bench does not induce a level of instability as seen in sport movements and activities of daily living. Because of this, many new types of equipment have been created in an attempt to induce instability, such as the COR Bench. 15 males and 7 females between the ages of 18 and 30 were recruited for the present study, which tested two forms of instability: using one dumbbell rather than two, and lifting on the COR bench compared to a flat bench. Thusly, EMG was used to measure muscle activity in four separate conditions of unilateral bench press movements: on a flat bench with one dumbbell, on a flat bench with two dumbbells, on the COR Bench with one dumbbell, and on the COR Bench with two dumbbells. Results indicated that lifting with one dumbbell compared to two dumbbells on the flat bench significantly increased muscle activity across all four muscles being analyzed (pectoralis major, p = .005; middle trapezius, p = .008; external obliques, p = .004; and internal obliques, p = .003), but lifting with one dumbbell compared to two dumbbells on the COR Bench only significantly increased muscle activity in the middle trapezius (p = .001), external obliques(p = . 032), and internal obliques (p = .001). The only muscle to exhibit a significant increase in muscle activity when going from one dumbbell on the flat bench to one dumbbell on the COR Bench was the middle trapezius (p = .010). These results imply that the COR Bench itself does not increase muscle activity as much as switching from two dumbbells to one dumbbell, regardless of the bench being used.

Training the bench press exercise on a traditional flat bench does not induce a level of instability as seen in sport movements and activities of daily living. Twenty participants were recruited to test two forms of instability: using one dumbbell rather than two and lifting on the COR bench compared to a flat bench. Electromyography (EMG) amplitudes of the pectoralis major, middle trapezius, external oblique, and internal oblique were recorded and compared. Differences in range of motion (ROM) were evaluated by measuring an angular representation of the shoulder complex. Four separate conditions of unilateral bench press were tested while lifting on a: flat bench with one dumbbell, flat bench with two dumbbells, COR Bench with one dumbbell, and COR Bench with two dumbbells. The results imply that there are no differences in EMG amplitude or ROM between the COR bench and traditional bench. However, greater ROM was found to be utilized in the single dumbbell condition, both in the COR bench and the flat bench.
