Electronic books or eBooks have the potential to revolutionize the way humans read and learn. eBooks offer many advantages such as simplicity, ease of use, eco-friendliness, and portability. The advancement of technology has introduced many forms of multimedia objects into eBooks, which may help people learn from them. To help the readers understand and comprehend a concept that is put forward by the author of an eBook, there is ongoing research involving the use of augmented reality (AR) in education. This study explores how AR and three-dimensional interactive models are integrated into eBooks to help the readers comprehend the content quickly and swiftly. It compares the reading activities of people when they experience these two visual representations within an eBook.

This study required participants to interact with some instructional material presented on an eBook and complete a learning measure. While interacting with the eBook, participants were equipped with a set of physiological devices, namely an ABM EEG headset and eye tracker during the experiment to collect biometric data that could be used to objectively measure their user experience. Fifty college students participated in this study. The data collected from each of the participants was used to analyze the reading activities of people by performing an Independent Samples t-test.

Software Defined Network (SDN) architecture has been widely used in various application domains. Aiming at the authentication and security issues of SDN architecture in autonomous decentralized system (ADS) applications, securing the mutual trust among the autonomous controllers, we combine trusted technology and SDN architecture, and we introduce an authentication protocol based on SDN architecture without any trusted third party between trusted domains in autonomous systems. By applying BAN predicate logic and AVISPA security analysis tool of network interaction protocol, we can guarantee protocol security and provide complete safety tests. Our work fills the gap of mutual trust between different trusted domains and provides security foundation for interaction between different trusted domains.

The multi-focus image fusion method is used in image processing to generate all-focus images that have large depth of field (DOF) based on original multi-focus images. Different approaches have been used in the spatial and transform domain to fuse multi-focus images. As one of the most popular image processing methods, dictionary-learning-based spare representation achieves great performance in multi-focus image fusion. Most of the existing dictionary-learning-based multi-focus image fusion methods directly use the whole source images for dictionary learning. However, it incurs a high error rate and high computation cost in dictionary learning process by using the whole source images. This paper proposes a novel stochastic coordinate coding-based image fusion framework integrated with local density peaks. The proposed multi-focus image fusion method consists of three steps. First, source images are split into small image patches, then the split image patches are classified into a few groups by local density peaks clustering. Next, the grouped image patches are used for sub-dictionary learning by stochastic coordinate coding. The trained sub-dictionaries are combined into a dictionary for sparse representation. Finally, the simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (SOMP) algorithm is used to carry out sparse representation. After the three steps, the obtained sparse coefficients are fused following the max L1-norm rule. The fused coefficients are inversely transformed to an image by using the learned dictionary. The results and analyses of comparison experiments demonstrate that fused images of the proposed method have higher qualities than existing state-of-the-art methods.

Computational thinking, the creative thought process behind algorithmic design and programming, is a crucial introductory skill for both computer scientists and the population in general. In this thesis I perform an investigation into introductory computer science education in the United States and find that computational thinking is not effectively taught at either the high school or the college level. To remedy this, I present a new educational system intended to teach computational thinking called Genost. Genost consists of a software tool and a curriculum based on teaching computational thinking through fundamental programming structures and algorithm design. Genost's software design is informed by a review of eight major computer science educational software systems. Genost's curriculum is informed by a review of major literature on computational thinking. In two educational tests of Genost utilizing both college and high school students, Genost was shown to significantly increase computational thinking ability with a large effect size.

Traffic analysis and traffic abnormality detection are emerged as an efficient way of detecting network attacks in recent years. The existing approaches can be improved by introducing a new model and a new analysis method of network user’s traffic behaviors. The description dimensions to network user’s traffic behaviors in the current approaches are high, resulting in high processing complexity, high delay in differentiating an individual user’s abnormal traffic behavior from massive network data, and low detection rate. To improve the detection rate and efficiency, we develop a new method of establishing user’s traffic behavior analysis system based on a new model of network traffic monitoring. First, we establish a more complete feature set based on the characteristics of network traffic to describe massive network user’s behaviors. Then, we define a feature selection rule based on the relative deviation distance to select the optimized feature set. We use the selected feature set to locate the abnormality moment and the users who produce the abnormal traffic behavior. Finally, a traffic behavior analysis method based on prediction is developed to improve efficiency of the system. This new method is applied to evaluate the mobile users on mobile cloud. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a higher detection rate and lower delay in the analysis of abnormal user’s traffic behavior than that of the existing approaches.

Cloud security is a system engineering problem. A common approach to address the problem is to adapt existing Trusted Network Connection (TNC) framework in the cloud environment, which can be used to assess and verify end clients’ system state. However, TNC cannot be applied to network equipment attached to the cloud computing environment directly. To allow the network devices to access the trusted network devices safely and reliably, we first developed a Trusted Network Equipment Access Authentication Protocol (TNEAAP). We use the BAN logic system to prove that TNEAAP is secure and credible. We then configure the protocol in an attack detection mode to experimentally show that the protocol can withstand attacks in the real network. Experiment results show that all the nine goals that decide the protocol’s security have been achieved.

Debugging is a boring, tedious, time consuming but inevitable step of software development and debugging multiple threaded applications with user interactions is even more complicated. Since concurrency and synchronism are normal features in Android mobile applications, the order of thread execution may vary in every run even with the same input. To make things worse, the target erroneous cases may happen just in a few specific runs. Besides, the randomness of user interactions makes the whole debugging procedure more unpredictable. Thus, debugging a multiple threaded application is a tough and challenging task. This thesis introduces a replay mechanism for debugging user interactive multiple threaded Android applications. The approach is based on the 'Lamport Clock' concept, 'Event Driven' implementation and 'Client-Server' architecture. The debugger tool described in this thesis provides a user controlled debugging environment where users or developers are allowed to use modified record application to generate a log file. During the record time, all the necessary events like thread creation, synchronization and user input are recorded. Therefore, based on the information contained in the generated log files, the debugger tool can replay the application off-line since log files provide the deterministic order of execution. In this case, user or developers can replay an application as many times as they need to pinpoint the errors in the applications.

The focus of this document is the examination of a new robot simulator developed to aid students in learning robotics programming and provide the ability to test their programs in a simulated world. The simulator, accessed via a website, provides a simulated environment, programming interface, and the ability to control a simulated robot. The simulated environment consists of a user-customizable maze and a robot, which can be controlled manually, via Web service, or by utilizing the Web programming interface. The Web programming interface provides dropdown boxes from which the users may select various options to program their implementations. It is designed to aid new students in the learning of basic skills and thought processes used to program robots. Data was collected and analyzed to determine how effective this system is in helping students learn. This included how quickly students were able to program the algorithms assigned to them and how many lines of code were used to implement them. Students' performance was also monitored to determine how well they were able to use the program and if there were any significant problems. The students also completed surveys to communicate how well the website helped them learn and understand various concepts. The data collected shows that the website was a helpful learning tool for the students and that they were able to use the programming interface quickly and effectively.

The Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) framework is a standard of module system and service platform that implements a complete and dynamic component model. Currently most of OSGi implementations are implemented by Java, which has similarities of Android language. With the emergence of Android operating system, due to the similarities between Java and Android, the integration of module system and service platform from OSGi to Android system attracts more and more attention. How to make OSGi run in Android is a hot topic, further, how to find a mechanism to enable communication between OSGi and Android system is a more advanced area than simply making OSGi running in Android. This paper, which aimed to fulfill SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and CBA (Component Based Architecture), proposed a solution on integrating Felix OSGi platform with Android system in order to build up Distributed OSGi framework between mobile phones upon XMPP protocol. And in this paper, it not only successfully makes OSGi run on Android, but also invents a mechanism that makes a seamless collaboration between these two platforms.
